Care & Maintenance Guide

How to keep your Rare Diamondss piece looking its best — for life.

Lifetime care guidance

A diamond is one of the hardest substances on earth — but the gold setting it sits in, and the brilliance of the stone itself, both benefit from regular care. A well-maintained piece will look as stunning in twenty years as it does the day it arrives. This guide covers everything you need to know.

Daily wear — the basics

Do

  • Put your ring on after applying lotions, perfume, and hairspray
  • Remove your ring before sleeping when possible
  • Store your piece in its original box when not wearing it
  • Remove before any heavy manual work or exercise
  • Have your ring professionally inspected once a year

Don't

  • Wear your ring in chlorinated pools or hot tubs
  • Apply cleaning products, bleach, or chemicals while wearing it
  • Store multiple pieces loose together — diamonds scratch gold
  • Wear your ring during contact sports or heavy lifting
  • Use ultrasonic cleaners at home without professional guidance

How to clean your piece at home

Regular at-home cleaning takes less than five minutes and keeps your diamond sparkling between professional cleans. Oils from your skin, lotions, and everyday products build up on the underside of the diamond and dull its brilliance over time. Cleaning restores it instantly.

1

Prepare a cleaning solution

Fill a small bowl with warm (not hot) water and add a few drops of mild dish soap. Avoid anything with harsh chemicals, bleach, or abrasives.

2

Soak for 20–30 minutes

Place your ring in the solution and let it soak. This loosens any buildup around the setting and under the stone.

3

Gently scrub

Use a very soft toothbrush to gently scrub around the setting, under the diamond, and along the band. Be gentle — you are removing residue, not polishing metal.

4

Rinse thoroughly

Rinse under warm running water. Make sure all soap residue is removed — soap film dulls the diamond just as much as skin oils.

5

Dry gently

Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid paper towels — they can leave micro-scratches on gold over time. Let it air dry fully before storing.

How often? For everyday wear pieces, once every 2–3 weeks is ideal. For pieces worn occasionally, clean before each wear to restore brilliance.

Care by metal type

Yellow Gold
White Gold
Rose Gold

Yellow gold is the most durable of the three gold colours and the most forgiving to maintain. Its warm tone is natural and does not require any coating to maintain its colour.

  • Yellow gold develops a natural patina over time — a slight softening of the shine that many consider beautiful. It can be professionally polished to restore its original lustre.
  • 14K yellow gold (most common in our collection) is harder and more scratch-resistant than 18K due to its higher alloy content.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to chlorine — it weakens gold alloys over time.
  • Polish with a soft jewellery cloth monthly to maintain shine between professional cleans.

Storage

How you store your jewellery matters as much as how you wear it. Diamonds are the hardest natural substance on earth — they will scratch other gemstones, metals, and even each other if stored loosely together.

Always store your piece in the original Rare Diamondss box when not wearing it
If storing multiple pieces, keep each in its own pouch or compartment
Store away from direct sunlight and extreme heat or humidity
Do not store in bathroom cabinets — steam and humidity accelerate tarnishing
For long-term storage, wrap in a soft cloth and place in a cool, dry location

What to avoid

Chemicals to keep away from your piece:

Chlorine bleach Swimming pool water Hot tub chemicals Acetone (nail polish remover) Hairspray and aerosols Hand sanitiser Perfume and cologne Household cleaning products

These substances do not typically damage the diamond itself, but they can discolour or weaken the gold setting, loosen prongs over time, and dull the stone's brilliance by leaving residue on the facets.

Professional servicing

We recommend having your piece professionally inspected by a jeweller once a year. A professional inspection checks for loose prongs, worn settings, and any early signs of wear that are best addressed early. It also includes an ultrasonic clean that restores a level of brilliance that at-home cleaning cannot fully achieve.

Any reputable local jeweller in the US can perform this service — it typically costs $25–$75 and takes less than an hour. Your IGI certificate should be kept safely at home and does not need to accompany the piece for routine servicing.

Need help or have a concern?

If you notice a loose stone, a damaged prong, or anything that does not look right — contact us immediately. Do not continue wearing the piece. A loose prong caught early is a five-minute repair. A lost stone is a much bigger problem.
